We picked up many brochures and when at one of the counters the staff asked me whether I would like to enter their free raffle - A Trip for Two, to South Australia and 3 nights on the Murray River Paddle steamer, return airfares included. I said "No Thank You, you will only phone me with travel requests". He said he would not phone me, however Wednesday morning the phone call came - we had won the trip!

The Paddle steamer was old style, from turn of the century, The Murray River is the largest river in Australia and the paddle steamer a delight to travel on. The journey took us inland, past irrigation farmlands, orchards, Aboriginal reserves, and small country towns.

7 Days In Budapest

A City That Retains Old Charm

13.09.2005 - 05.08.2012 sunny 22 °C

Our previous trip to Europe and UK was with family for 7 weeks during 1993 and included 4 weeks in the UK and 2 weeks in Europe , mainly in Spain and France. During September 2005 my wife and I visited Europe by ourselves with touchdown being Budapest for 7 nights. This was the commencement of a 5 week holiday through some of the old parts of Europe.

Being Australian we were used to modern cities and just loved walking the streets of Budapest, enjoying the old buildings, most maintained beautifully, the magnificent Danube river,, beautiful churches and synagogue, markets, public baths, cafes and restaurants.

We have since returned to Budapest during 2012 and enjoyed our 2 days whilst on a 14 day River Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. During this visit we had a tour of the famous Opera house including a recital by one of the female Opera Stars.

Certainly one of the "dream" cities of Europe

Szentendre - A Day Trip From Budapest

Traditional Town Not Far from Budapest

We arrived by taxi and returned to Budapest on the Vintage Steam Train. An easy and interesting day trip!

It was good to get out of the city and enjoy the village life for 3 or 4 hours. Not without worries we were "conned" into a "free taxi ride" from Budapest. All looked "ok" until the driver turned off the highway and took us to a warehouse/ factory outlet selling all sorts of "tourist" goods. Trapped for 45 minutes we were a little angry but eventually arrived in Szentendre safely.

Our visit was during September 2005, a beautiful sunny day to visit this lovely old village. Very easy to walk around, plenty of locals dressed in traditionally. Gift shops for the ladies, restaurants and wine to satisfy your hunger and thirst. A nice change from city life.

The return trip to Budapest on the steam train was a delight!
